Snapchat in business – marketing and building relationships with young customers

Social media is becoming increasingly important and is essential when it comes to building relationships with potential customers. Make the most of Snapchat’s potential for this.

Snapchat is a tool that is misunderstood and often underrated. To many people, it seems pointless. After all, why record 10-second videos or take photos that will disappear? Trends and funny filters are still not enough to convince a company to set up an account. However, there is more to Snapchat than that – people! More specifically, the users who use it every day: there are around 150 million of them worldwide, and over 1.2 million in Poland.

Be where your target audience is

1.2 million people is a lot. Who are they? Mostly teenagers – aged between 13 and 24. They use Snapchat to chat with their friends. They share bits of their lives and see what others are up to. They show what they look like, where they are and what they can see. They sometimes add a short comment, an icon or a new filter to their photos and videos.

They follow not only their friends, but also influencers (usually bloggers and vloggers), as well as brands. By running a business account, you can reach your customers. You’ll be in the same place as them. Young people are always on the lookout for something new. After all, their parents are already on Facebook, and they want something of their own, something different. Young people have always wanted to be different, so if you don’t understand the Snapchat phenomenon, that’s fine. The important thing is to understand how to tailor your communication to your target audience. If they’re there, you should be too!

Who stands a chance of success?

Snapchat can be regarded as the realm of bloggers, vloggers, sports stars and TV celebrities (in Poland, for example, the ‘Ekipa z Warszawy’ group). They are the opinion leaders and role models for some of today’s teenagers. The prestigious top spot, in terms of number of followers, is held by littlemooonster96 – an 18-year-old from Katowice who uses the platform to share her life. Large groups of teenagers turn up to meet her in various cities across Poland. In second place is the well-known fashion blogger, Maffashion.

In the top 20, we find Maciek Musiał, whom most people will recognise from the TVP series *Rodzinka.pl*. The list also includes politicians such as Robert Biedroń, who is doing a brilliant job on social media promoting Słupsk (I recommend following his channels – he knows what he’s doing). Speaking of politicians, if anyone’s missing the Prime Minister, for the past few months they’ve been able to admire her and her activities on the Prime Minister’s Office account.

Brands and companies have also found their place and built up a following. The Piotr i Paweł retail chain, which has recently been very active on social media – and is doing a good job of it – joined the Snapchat community this month. We wish them the best of luck and are keeping our fingers crossed ???? It may come as no surprise, but Coca-Cola takes the top spot among brands. The top 100 includes, amongst others, shopping centres, TV and radio channels, websites, newspapers, universities, mobile phone networks, clothing shops and more. There’s a wide range of sectors represented, which proves that Snapchat isn’t just for a select few.

What should I show?

Everyday life, as seen through your company’s eyes. Ideally, it should be interesting to your audience. They’re the ones who decide whether they want to watch your story. Through 10-second videos and photos, you can tell stories and comment on the world around you. There are plenty of possibilities; you can’t plan everything – it’s all about the HERE and NOW. You record and put it out there. You share what you have with others. You don’t need special equipment or advanced photography or filming skills – all you need is a normal mobile phone with a camera and a downloaded app.

Think about whether young people are your target audience and whether you have something to say to them. If so, don’t hesitate any longer – set up an account! It’ll take you less than 5 minutes, and it might well be well worth it. However, if you don’t feel confident enough to run a channel yourself and don’t want someone else to do it, consider collaborating with one of Snapchat’s influencers. Posting a sponsored post could be a real hit for your business.
